Outline of Research at the Start	本研究は、江戸時代に刑罰として適用された切腹が何をもって名誉のある死というイメージが定着したかを問題視し、実際に起きた判例を材料に斬罪や死罪との比較を通して、「名誉の死」とされる切腹における名誉ないし恩典の内実を明らかにすることを目指す。刑罰としての切腹は『公事方御定書』には明文化されず、刑法規定を記す『百箇条調書』には斬罪より軽い死刑であると記されているが、斬罪それ自体は武士を対象とした特別な死刑であり、原則御目見得以上の武士に適用された。本研究では、名誉観から見て切腹と斬罪や死罪との違いはどこにあるかを検討する。
