Outline of Research at the Start

睡眠には、レム睡眠とノンレム睡眠に代表される段階的構造（睡眠ステージ）が存在するが、その進化的起源や意義は未解明である。本研究では、中枢神経系を持たない刺胞動物ヒドラにおいて、睡眠ステージの原型的構造が存在するかを検証する。行動解析と神経活動の可視化により「静」と「動」の睡眠様状態を定義し、原始的動物における睡眠制御の構造とその進化的普遍性の理解を目指す。
