Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The aim of this project is to shed light on the characteristics of Buddhist practices among Theravadins in Mainland Southeast Asia, by focusing on the locations of Buddhist temples/hermitages and the movements of monks between them, which constitutes the core of the practice of Buddhists, and to undertake a comparative study of 14 areas over six countries, employing field surveys and historical materials such as statistics and official gazettes. The project has gathered a primary source of data on 3,430 temples and 15,241 monks in total. An area informatic analysis of this material has been conducted applying the GIS.The study also attempts to visualize dynamics and meaning of the data to get a comprehensive understanding and pluralistic interpretation of the microscopic data obtained from the field surveys by incorporating document data. The massive data is still being processed, but regional peculiarities are emerging from the "ordination charts" and "tracking routes" of monks'movement.
