Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We have examined the cultural/political implications of Manifest Destiny, a concept that became the driving force behind expansionist nationalism in mid-nineteenth-century America. Moreover, an in-depth analysis has clarified the ways in which the concept served as an affective narrative controlling its psychological impact in the fields of fiction, political discourse, and popular culture. As a result, our research has uncovered new clues for re-interpreting US expansionism in a global context. Our renewed understanding of the political unconscious of Victorian America has led us to a unique perspective in which we look at the earth as a globe, proving that our approaches will contribute to the analysis of contemporary global situations. In March 2018 we held a symposium where we finally redefined the concept of planetary symbiosis in the twenty-first century, and we are planning to publish a related collection of articles in March 2019.
