Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Stem cell differentiation technologies using pluripotent stem cells, especially iPS cells, are currently applied for understanding of intractable diseases, drug discovery, and development of regenerative medicine. In this research, we have developed a novel differentiation method that generates lung progenitor cells from somatic cells in vitro. We have screened transcription factors selectively expressed in the developing lung, and found several transcription factors that can induce differentiation of somatic tissue cells into lung progenitor cells. The generated progenitor cells can further differentiate into various lung tissue cells in vitro. This novel differentiation method could be used as a basic technology for the regeneration of respiratory system in the near future.
