Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, it was hypothesized that the facilitation of object recognition by active exploration of 3-D object views resulted from a compensation for a lack of imagery ability based on the signals from the motor cortices. To verify this hypothesis, a series of psychological and fMRI experiments was conducted. The results of the psychological experiments showed that the facilitative effect of active exploration was evident in the low imagers. In the resting-state fMRI before the experiment, a significant fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (fALFF) was observed in the motor cortex in the low imagers. However, no region showing a significant fALFF was observed after the experiment, suggesting that the individual differences in the brain network involved in imagery generation were diminished by active exploration. These findings support the hypothesis and clarified a part of the brain mechanism for the facilitative effect of active exploration.
