Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We conducted fundamental research on structure determination and functional understanding of novel biosurfactant. Tetrachlorethylene (PCE)-reducing activity was found in the filtrate of activated sludge which had been acclimatized to PCE for a long time. The PCE-reducing activity in the filtrate was thought to be an organic matter derived from living organisms . Since the degradation products from PCE treated with the filtrate could not be detected by various chromatographies, one of PCE-reducing substances in activated sludge was thought to be a biosurfactant-like substance which increases the solubility of PCE in water. Structural analyises with FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and MS by use of partially-purified biosurfactant-like substance indicated that the substance could be a polyoxypropyl ether-like compound.
