Outline of Final Research Achievements |
More than 5 years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake, I conducted interviews with municipal officials, a women’s shelter, and related organizations from 2014 to 2016 in disaster-stricken areas to investigate how women are supported at the time of and following a disaster. An increased incidence of reports of domestic violence was found in disaster-stricken areas, and some of these cases involved higher levels of abuse including economic violence. Immediately after the disaster, the women’s shelter in the disaster-stricken area provided more consultation, protection, and support for victims. These efforts have enabled battered women who had been left isolated by the earthquake in disaster-stricken areas to gain access to support. Thus, it is neccesity to construct support system at the time of disaster rapidly and local governments and women’s shelters had better collaborate in order to train supporters and officials to support victims.
