| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The transformation of calendars was performed 4 times during Edo period. Making calendars contributed to spread knowledge concerning calendars among people throughout the country. There was a long blank of the transformation of calendars since the 9th century until 1685 when Jokyoreki was issued. Shibukawa Harumi who had made Jokyoreki had nationalistic views which were characterized as Shintoism. According to Shibunawa, Emperor Jinmu made the oldest calendar, but is was lost, and after it, Chinese calendars were introduced to Japan. For him, using Chinese calendars means being colony of Chinese cultural imperialism. After Jokyoreki, popularity of calendars brought about new types of calendars which were invented in many different ways. We should pay attention to Buddhist astronomy which was spread beyond individual sects throughout the19th century.
