Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In order to understand Japanese art we need to study Chinese art. There are many Chinese sculptures in Kyushu, but not much research has been done until now. Kyushu played a major role in the exchange between Japan and China. Studying abundant Chinese sculptures in Kyushu will help to clarify the characteristics of Japanese art, the characteristics of history and culture of Kyushu, and the exchange between Japan and China. Therefore, I investigated Chinese sculptures in Kyushu and collected basic information and pictures. In particular, I studied stone statues such as "Satsuma-to" and Song-dynasty style lion sculptures on the west side of Kyushu. "Satsuma-to" is a stone pagoda in which five Buddha statues are engraved. As a result of this survey, I was able to know when the important "Satsuma-to" and Song style lions were made.I wrote five papers and made a report containing them. This report will be of great help to future research.
