Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The objective of the research was to analyse the ideological and socio-cultural factors which stimulated the construction of the concept of the gwerin (meaning the Welsh folk) in the 19th century Wales. The idea of the Welsh speaking, Non-conformist working class people as the representative of the Cymry had been gradually developed during the 19th-century, and culminated in the idealised image of the cultivated, respectable folk living in an autonomous pre-industrial, agrarian community, was publicised by O. M. Edwards and his fellow cultural nationalists through the publication of popular magazines and other media. The significance of the invention of the gwerin is not only their achievements of creating the ideal register of the Welsh language based on the speech of the common people and the canonised literature for the populace. The Welsh gwerin was also aimed to provide the post-industrial UK with the alternative way of life which the Welsh, as an equal partner of the English.
