Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Taiwan was under Japanese rule for 50 years from 1895 and Korea for 35 years from 1910. Propagation of the Japanese language remained stagnant due to the low school attendance rate. In order to put an end to this, social education was promoted. The National Language Training School was opened in Taiwan in 1930 and in 1934, the Simplified School was opened in Korea. These two institutions are not similar, but share a common characteristic in that they both supplement school education. Beginning with the regulations pertaining to education after the 1910s, these two colonies share common traits in their policies, but regarding social education, they possess individual characteristics. The difference in the Japanese language propagation rate in the final years of Japanese rule was great, and the causes can be pointed to not only the policy differences, but to the written language and whether or not a common language existed in each society before Japanese rule.
