Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study intended to look back upon the development of China's policy and practices of disseminating Chinese language toward foreign countries with so-called Confucius Institutes as the base. It aimed at clarifying the political intention as well as related problems from the following viewpoints; (1) the organizational management and function, (2) the quality assurance of teachers, (3) the relationship with the host universities, and (4) the degree of influence through teaching contents. The rapid increase of Confucius Institutes occurs in the context of push-factors on the part of China which has been strengthening its presence in the international arena, and pull-factors on the side of host countries. However, the dynamics varies by country, area or institution. Based on the comparative study of surveyed institutions, it was confirmed that those Confucius Institutes which took conditions of location into consideration, and blazed a trail has the potential for further development.
