Research Abstract

The aim of this study is to find the knowledge and method to improve teacher education, both pre-service and in-service training by analysis of teachers' life-courses.
Main concerns of research are as follows;
(1) What kind of knowledge and abilities are necessary to teaching profession, (2) How they developed their professional abilities, (3) What kind of experiences, conditions and people supported their development, and (4) How they had been influenced by the historical and social changes.
The cohort we chose were ex-teachers who graduated from Nagano Prefecture Normal School in 1981 and worked about 40 years as teachers. On their life-courses, they experienced innovative schooling of Taisho New Education Movement as pupils, Great Depression of early Showa period when they started their teaching career, schools during World War <II> , and Education Reform after the war and so on. We sent questionnaires to 121 ex-teachers and received 71 answers. We analized their answers and chose 36 ex-teachers as the object of focused interview.
We analized these materials from multi-disciplinary point of view such as history, sociology, psychology and education.
We presented our report at the national conference of Japan Education Association in 1985 and 1986.
