Research Abstract

This investigation is undertaken for the purpose of establishing clinically adjustable artificial teeth and occlusion on aged partially edentate patient. At the first step, author completed sophisticated computerised research equipment to monitor patient's jaw movements and electromyographic activity, and to relate the two together accurately.
Chewing cycles, masticatory movements and load were analysed on the group of partially edentate, and mandibular bilateral extension saddle prosthodontics were inserted patients. Also the effects of changing the size and shape of the artificial occlusal surfaces on masticatory movement were studied, and the morphological relation of the residual ridge form and opposing teeth, then the importance of support for partially edentate mouth was assessed. An evaluation of the supporting ability of partially edentate patient at maximal clenching in centric occlusion was carried out, compared with pre-treatment and after denture insertion.
The results were as follows:
i) The masticatory muscle activity was increased about 30 percent at the denture insertion, the rate of increasing I-EMG value of anterior temporal muscle was higher than that of masseter mascle.
ii) The masticatory mascle activity increased about 2.5 times after one year treatment, and about 3 times when denture was worn, and these markedly related morphological relation and stability of centric occlusion.
