Research Abstract

A Business History of the "Daikokuya Sugiura"Shop of Kyoto Daikokuya Sugiura,Maving from Takashima Dist rict of Ohmi Province(Shiga Prefecture)to Kyoto, stanted a Kimono draper's shop around 1684-87.Erentually he established a similar shop in Edo(Tokyo)and became one of the Most Prominent Merchants of the Edo Period.
His business Continued to thrive during the Meiji era,and in 1923 was incorporated with a Capital of 200,000yen,desingnating the Tokyo shop as the main shop.Though the Kyoto shop was Clased in 1956,the Tokyo shop, being renamed the Daisan Company,Continues in Business to this day.
The fourth goneration owrer of the shop,Toshitaka, became quite devoted to the proctical ethics of "Shingaku"founded by Baigan Ishida, and having mastered it.he embodied Shingaku in his Management policy. The policy has been ganded doun thraugh to later generations successirely. which constitutes a characteristic beature of the Saikokuya Sugiura.
My research findings are the 1.Daikokuya Sugiura was an ohm:(Shiga Prefecture)Merchant of Samurai lineage;2,without being flessed with children, however,he formed flood relations with the Sakae family of his native district, and the Sugiura-Sakae family has ensured the Continuation of the shop;3,accordingly clerks from Takashima District predominated at the shpo;and 4,the regulations governing the clerks made in 1918, which I believe to be based on Edo period Singaku teaching, embody a prototype of the modern employment system.
Thus we may conclude that the philosophy of management and the consanguineous operation of the Daikokuya Sugiura, though belong to a mold differing from those of the Mitsui or the Mitsubishi(Zaibatu)financial cligues, characterize the traditional management structure of a Japanese shop.
