Research Abstract

At the present time, there are 1.13 billion cattle in the world. More than two third of these cattle are raised in developing countries, mainly located in tropical and sub-tropical zone. These animals greatly contribute to people in these countries as draft power in land-cultivation, manure production animals, precious protein food and cash-income. However, growth rate, calving rate and milk production of cattle raised in tropical countries are less than one third as compared those of cattle in temperate countries. One of main reason of the low productivites is low plane of nutrition, especially mineral deficiency and imbalances in animals.
Mineral status of cattle and dietary minerals contents in Java in Indonesia was studied in this research work. The samples of feeds, blood and the liver were collected from two regions in East Java and one region of West Java in both of dry and rainy seasons. Judging from mineral concentrations in blood plasma and feeds, phosphorus and sodium deficiency are common in cattle in Java. Most of all dietary iron contents in Java were more than ten times in comaprison with those in Japan, showing harmful effects to animals. There are possibilities of copper and zinc deficiencies and manganese toxicosis in cattle in Indonesia.
