Research Abstract |
This project is concerned with the transport mechanisms of phosphoenolpyruvate across the red cell membrane. Results of this project are summarized as follows: 1. Transport of phosphoenolpyruvate is mediated by Band 3 protein of red cell membrane as well as the transports of chloride and phosphate. 2. The 60th-lysine residue from the COOH-terminal end of Band 3 constitutes at least a part of the active center of the transport system. 3. In addition to the lysine residue, a histidine residue within Band 3 participates in the transport system. The histidine is located at the intracellular surface of the cell membrane and allosterically interacts with the transfer site. 4. Phosphoenolpyruvate transports across not only the red cell membrane but also the cell membranes of kidney and liver.
