Research Abstract |
Anorexia and the reduction of food intake as the complaints among the patients after gastrectomy are frequently observed. It is reasonable to understand that the above mentioned complaints are caused by the post-operative physiometabolic disorder. The patients with the abnormality in taste are found up the above patients. The sense of taste and the state of food intake of 39 patients with gastric cancer-treated by the gastrectomy at 1st Department of Surgery of Tottori University Hospital from January 1, 1985 to December 31, 1988 were investigated. These patients were examined on the sense of taste, especially, both before and after gastrectomy as well as chemotherapy. The studies of the caloric intakes of hospital meals and the complaints after feeding were followed according to the patients records. The post-operative feeding care for the patients with a loss of appetite was studied. The complaints in relation to loss of appetite were based on the sense of stagnation after partial gast

rectomy and abdominal dilatation after total gastrectogy. At the early days of the post-operative feeding, the caloric values of the hospital meals after the partial gastrectomy were higher than that after the total gastrectomy. However, the caloric values both after the partial and total gastrectomy were gradually increased until they reached a similar level on the 21st day. On the gustometory, the hyper sensitiveness of the sweet and the bitter taste were observed. Absolute thresholds for the sweet taste in aged generations were remarkably reduced as compared with that in young generations. The youth was sensible to the salty taste, while the aged was insensible to it. On the sourness, the hyper sensitiveness of the youth and the dullness of the aged were observed. As the feeding care for the patients with eating disorder and anorexia, it was suggested that the most important care to analyze their sufficient degree of the post-operative feeding and to improve the caloric intake of hospital meals to supply wants in nutrition out of six kinds of major groups based on the standard tables of food composition in Japan.
