Research Abstract |
This research was done in collaboration with Dalian University of Technology in China. The outline of results are as follows: 1.We constructed English-Japanese translation system FILTS suited for small size computer, which realized accurate and rapid translation in the limited field. Using this system we examined the fundamental problems in machine translation. 2.We tried Korean to Japanese translation by using above system and solved the problems of selection of meaning of "joshi"(a kind of postposition). 3.We started the research on machine translation from Chinese to Japanese from 1988. The following are substance of study: (1) Analyzing Chinese text we made out syntactic rules required for translation. (2) As the first step to the realization of the Chinese-Japanese machine translation system, prototype system was constructed on the personal computer on the basis of FILTS. Both Chinese kanji and Japanese kanji can be used same environment with this system by using Chinese word processor NiHao-FP as front-end processor. Translation experiments were performed to check the validity of the syntactic data and to obtain the information to make a full-scale system. We used 150 sentences extracted from the "Zhongwen chubu (Shoryudo)" for test data. (3) We translated chapter 4 of "The Handbook of Artificial Intelligence" into Chinese by hand with the aid of Chinese researcher, which is intended to use as a text for specialized field.
