Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The quasi-equilibrium between stable and radioactive cesium in the studied Japanese cedar forest has not been reached yet. We predict - further removal of the residues of the initially intercepted radiocesium from oldest foliage, small branches and outer bark; - increase of the radiocesium concentrations in young foliage, inner bark and sapwood; - increase of the radiocesium concentrations and total inventories in heartwood due to its internal translocation from sapwood and inner bark; - since heartwood is the final depot of cesium isotopes in Japanese cedar, the radiocesium fraction in the tree trunks will not decrease with time; moreover, the total radiocesium fraction in the aboveground biomass may increase with time due to intensification of its root uptake and growth of biomass.
