Outline of Annual Research Achievements

1983年に、サウレスは一次元格子上の電子気体系においてポテンシャルを周期的に断熱変化させたとき、一周期後の電荷の移動量が量子化され、それがトポロジカル不変量であることを最初に見出した。我々は二つの波長を重ね合わせた光超格子系の制御性の高さを最大限に駆使して、そのパラメーターを断熱的に変化させることで、世界で初めてサウレスのトポロジカルチャージポンピングを実現することに成功した。本研究では、これをさらに発展させ、トポロジカル量子物質の物理に新たな展開をもたらすことを研究の目的とした。より具体的には、冷却イッテルビウム原子を対象とした。これにより、その豊富な同位体を利用することが可能になる。さらに、原子間相互作用や不純物やランダムポテンシャルに対する、トポロジカルポンピングの堅牢性を明らかにすることを目的として設定した。
本年度の研究実績として、上記の研究目的に向けて、概ね順調に研究を進めることができ、具体的には、以下のような成果を得ることができた。まず、1)ライス・メーレモデルの光格子の周期と異なる周期の光格子を強度を制御して加えることによって準周期ポテンシャルによる乱れポテンシャルを制御された状態で導入したうえでトポロジカルチャージポンピングを行い、堅牢性を再確認することに成功した。2)それと同時に、この振る舞いと数値計算と比較して、実験結果との定量的一致を得ることに成功した。特に、エネルギーギャップの考察から、観測された振る舞いが、乱れポテンシャルによって誘起されたトポロジカル相転移である可能性を強く示唆することが明らかになった。
