研究概要

「生命の誕生」に次ぐ、初期地球史における生物界の大事件は「約35〜18億年前に起こったと思われる酸素発生型生物の急激な増加」及び「カンブリア紀初頭(約5億4千年前)に起こった骨格生物の出現と生物種の爆発的増加」である。本研究は、「地球史におけるこれらの生物界の大異変は、海底熱水活動によって、海洋へのリン及び重金属元素のフラックスが急激に増加した為である」という、研究代表者の新しい仮説の検証を行いつつ、初期地球における生物界の進化の原因を明らかにすることを目的とした。
具体的な研究方法として、約30〜18億年前の期間及び約7〜5億年前に海底で生成した堆積岩が存在する代表的な数カ所の地域から、地質時代にそって系統的に岩石試料を採集し、その試料の無機地球化学的、有機地球化学的及び同位体組成の変化を明らかにすることにより、上記の目的の達成を目指した。
調査研究対象地域は、次の4地域とした。A地域:カナダ・南オンタリオ州。B地域:カナダ・ニューファンドランド島地域。C地域:フランス北部・ノルマンディー地域。D地域:南アフリカ・カ-プバ-ル地域。A及びB地域における地質調査は、平成7年度7月から8月にかけ延べ11名(内、国内研究者2名)によって行われた。C及びD地域における調査は平成8年7月から8月にかけ、延べ11名(内、国外研究者5名)によって行われた。
各地域においては、各国地質調査所、大学及び鉱山会社の全面的な支援を受けることができ、精密な地質調査及び系統的な多量(約千個)の岩石試料の採集が可能となり、予期した以上の成果を野外調査において収めることができた。採集された試料は、東北大学、鹿児島大学、ペンシルヴァニア州立大学及びジュニアータ大学の共同研究者によって様々な手法を用いて研究され、これら試料に含まれる微生物及び大型化石、有機物、鉱物及び岩石の種類、量比やこれらの無機化学的、有機化学的及び同位体化学的性質の時空的変化を明らかにしようとしている。
調査最終年度(第二年度)までの時点で、上記の野外及び室内研究から明らかにされた重要な事柄は次のとおりである。
1.従来の支配的な学説によれば、約20億年前に爆発的な生物活動及び種の分岐が行われ、大気及び海洋は還元的環境から酸化的環境へと変化したといわれていた。しかし、本研究によって得られた種々の地球化学的データ、特に古土壌の鉄の化学及び炭素同位体組成、堆積岩に含まれる有機物及び硫化鉱物の同位体組成などから、約30億年前には、すでに種の分岐が行われており、大気・海洋は酸化的であったことが明らかとなった。また、約27〜20億年前に大規模な海底熱水活動が起こり、生物活動に大きな影響を与えた可能性も明らかとなった。
2.約5億5千万年前に起こった骨格生物の爆発的発生は、全世界的な規模における海洋の化学組成の変化(特に、リンなどのフラックスの増加)及び同位体組成の変化と密接な関係がある可能性が高いことが明らかとなった。また、大規模な浅海の生成や気候など環境変化が起こった可能性が高いことも明らかとなった。これらの変化は、マントル対流の変化などによる超大陸の分裂に伴う現象と考えられる。
上記1及び2の研究成果は、資源地質学会、資源地質学会・鉱物学会・岩石鉱物鉱床学会合同学会、地球惑星科学関連学会およびアメリカ地質学会において計20篇の発表として公表された。さらに、国際学会誌である"Geology"、"Geochimica Cosmochimica Act"、"Chemical Geology"、"Ore Deposit Reviews"などに5篇発表済み、または印刷中である。さらに約20篇の論文を準備中である。
