研究概要

セルンで建設中のLHC加速器建設協力として、10テスラ級高磁場超伝導マグネットの開発研究を行った。対象マグネットは、双極ならびに四極超伝導マグネットである。
双極超伝導マグネットでは、運転定格磁場8.4テスラを目標とし、セルンの開発研究と相補的になるよう緊密に連絡を取り計画を進めた。平成9年度は、昨年製作・試験を行った1m長のモデルマグネットについて、常温に戻したときのクエンチ特性への影響を主眼に引き続き試験した。その結果、今回開発されたマグネットでは比較的影響が少なく、良好であることが分かった。
実験衝突点最近傍の四極超伝導マグネットでは、70mmのコイル内径で、240T/mの世界最大級の磁場勾配を得ることが目標である。コイル内最大磁場も9.6テスラを越える。平成9年度は、昨年度までの設計を基にモデルマグネット1号機の製作・試験に主眼を置いた。製作においては、コイルや電磁力支持構造物の機械特性等や試験に関してセルンの担当者と緊密に連絡を取りつつ開発研究を行ってきた。1号機の製作によって、強磁場勾配四極マグネットの開発に必要な寸法、応力などの基本データが得られた。さらに、このマグネットを試験し、定格運転磁場勾配205T/mを最初のクエンチで得ることができた。トレーニング(クエンチ電流が徐々に上昇すること)により設計磁場勾配240T/mを超え、最終的には250T/mを発生できた。このコイル内径のマグネットとして最強の磁場勾配である。この成果を実機製作に反映する。
これ等の開発研究を進めるために、両研究所から担当研究者が夫々派遣され、5回に及ぶ研究打合わせのための会議が持たれた。また、3月にはこの研究成果をまとめるための技術会議がセルンで持たれた。
