研究概要

1995年以来、科学衛星GEOTAILは磁気圏サブストームの際に磁気リコネクションが発生すると考えられている地心距離10〜30Reの磁気圏尾部プラズマシートを観測してきた。本研究では、当初の実施計画に沿ってこの領域におけるGEOTAIL衛星の観測データの解析を軸に米国のWIND、POLARの両衛星、およびロシアのInterball-Tail衛星との国際共同研究によって磁気リコネクション過程の詳細な研究が行われ、多くの重要な進展がもたらされた。これらの研究成果は国際的な学術雑誌に掲載ないし投稿中であるが、平成8年11月に金沢市で開催された国際シンポジウム「地球磁気圏尾部研究の新たな展望」や12月のアメリカ地球物理連合大会などの国際的な学会で発表され、大きな反響を呼んだ。以下、その代表的な点を列挙する。
1.磁気リコネクション発生の証拠の一つである遅進衝撃波がロープとプラズマシートの環境に存在することがGEOTAIL衛星の観測結果によって同定され、更に、遅進衝撃波およびその近傍における粒子の3次元速度分布関数の詳細な変化の様相が明らかにされた。その結果、遅進衝撃波の上流側で衝撃波に流れ込む低温イオンと逆方向に流れる(下流から漏れ出した)高温イオンの存在する領域があることが発見され、Foreshock領域と命名された。その大きさおよび衝撃波下流までの全体的な厚みは、それぞれ、上流イオンの慣性長の数倍と約20倍程度である。上流の低温イオンはForeshock領域から加熱されはじめ、そのイオン加熱の寄与は全体の3〜20%に達すると算定された。また、イオン加熱は対向するイオン流によって励起される電磁サイクロトロン波によるものであることが示唆された。これらの結果は今後の遅進衝撃波理論の発展に重要な拘束条件を与えるものとされている。
2.GEOTAIL衛星によって観測されたプラズモイドにおけるイオンの3次元速度分布関数の中にローブ起源と考えられるビーム成分が存在すること(磁気リコネクションによるプラズモイド形成の証拠)、更にまた、磁気リコネクション発生の近傍と考えられる領域ではnon-gyrotropicな複数のビーム成分の存在が発見され、いずれも計算機シミュレーションで再現することに成功した。これらの結果から、リコネクション領域近傍のイオンの運動学的性質が明らかにされた。
3.米国のWIND衛星による磁気圏上流の太陽風磁場データおよびPOLAR衛星によるオーロラ撮像観測結果とGEOTAIL衛星による磁気圏尾部の観測結果の共同研究によって、磁気圏サブストームにおける爆発的なオーロラ発達以前に地心距離25Re付近の尾部プラズマシートで磁気リコネクションが始まっている観測例が発見された。従来数多くのサブストーム発生機構が提案されており、磁気圏尾部におけるリコネクションがサブストーム発生をトリガーするかどうかは議論の分かれるところであったが、この観測例はサブストーム発生にリコネクションが重要な役割を果していること示す重要な観測証拠である。
4.ロシアのInterball-Tail衛星とGEOTAIL衛星による磁気圏尾部プラズマシートの同時観測、および地上観測データとの共同研究により、地心距離13ReにおけるInterball-Tailは地球向きの高速プラズマ流、28ReにおけるGEOTAILは反地球向きの高速流をほぼ同時に(これもまた、サブストーム開始直前に)観測した例が発見された。これは、前項に述べたサブストーム発生条件におけるリコネクションの重要性を示すと同時に、リコネクションがInterball-TailとGEOTAILの間で発生したことを示す観測証拠である。
GEOTAILによる高速プラズマ流の観測結果の統計的解析によって、サブストーム発生に伴う磁気リコネクションが始まる領域は真夜中付近およびそのやや夕方側の20〜30Reの領域のプラズマシートであること、また、その領域が下流に移るにつれて尾部の脇の方向に広がり、プラズモイドが形成される状況が明らかにされた。
