研究概要

日・豪、日・米の磁気共役点を含む210度磁気子午線沿いの多点と北米(カナダ、アメリカ)、南米(ブラジル、ペル-)、西太平洋域の経度の隔った赤道域の多点とを組織的に組み合わせた地球規模の地上観測網を用い、極域や衛星観測のみでは捉えられなかった地球規模の空問的なエネルギー輸送の広がりや時間発展を分離することにより、特に、磁気嵐や磁気圏嵐を引き起こすような太陽風の変動電磁場に呼応した磁気圏全体の応答の仕組みや、発生する擾乱・波動と高エネルギー粒子の極域から赤道域までの3次元的な流入・輸送・変換過程を明らかにすることが本研究の目的であった。
本国際学術研究の目的を達するために、平成8-9年度に以下のような調査研究が実施された。
(1)210度磁気子午線沿いのオーロラ帯に位置する極東のシベリア、アラスカ地区での電磁場擾乱の観測と磁気赤道域に近いフィリピン、グアム、ヤップでの電磁場並びに電離層擾乱の観測調査、新たに、極域(カナダ)や南米(ブラジル、ペル-)での電磁場観測を加えた、極域と赤道域での国際共同・同時観測研究を開始した。
(2)極域(カナダ)での電磁気擾乱の観測については、STEP国際事業期間に東京大学が中心に実施してきたネットワーク観測網の磁力計、オーロラ観測機器等の点検・再設置を行うことにより、国際共同の同時観測研究を再開した。
(3)また、極域擾乱の磁気赤道域までの侵入・輪送過程を調べるために、太平洋域の中・低緯度に位置する韓国、ハワイ、パプアニューギニア、ポナペ、インドネシア、オーストラリアの各観測点の地磁気観測装置の点検と再整備を行い、同時観測を開始した.
(4)特に、西太平洋域のフィリピンのセブ島とダバオ、ミクロネシア諸島のポナペ、ヤップ、グアムやクリスマス島の磁気赤道地域における観測研究については、新たな磁力計の設置や電磁気的な総合観測を実施するための学術調査が行なわれた。
(5)本研究に関わる地磁気、オーロラ、衛星等のデータを効率よく収集するために、1996年7月にオーストラリアで開催された西太平洋域地球物理国際会議と1997年8月にスウェーデン、ウプサラで開催されたIAGA(国際地球電磁気学・超高層大気物理学協会)学術総会に研究代表者と分担者を派遣した。特に、ISTP計画による人工衛星や本研究以外の海外での地上観測網との組織的な共同観測のための打ち合わせや、デ-夕収集・交換を積極的に行い、グローバルな電磁気擾乱の侵入・輸送過程の解析研究をすすめることができた。
(6)最終年度に研究成果を冊子にまとめた。
以上の調査研究により、極域や衛星観測のみでは捉えられなかった、1時間から数10分のDP2型の磁場変動からPc3-5帯のULF波動までの地球規模のエネルギー輪送の空間的な広がりや時間発展を分離できる基礎的なデータを取得するとともに、sc/siなどの過渡的な太陽風の変動電磁場に呼応した磁気圏全体の応答の仕組みや、発生する地球規模擾乱の極域から赤道域までの流入・輸送・変換過程の解明の手がかりを得ることが出来た。
