研究概要

環北極雪氷圏として極域カナダ、極域ロシア、ノルウェー域城、東部シベリア、グリーンランドを研究地域に設定した。調査観測隊員を派遣し、各地域で各種環境試料の採取を実施し、北極域での環境変化の現状を調査した。具体的には以下の通りである。
1.極域カナダについては、カナダ地質調査所との共同研究として同地域から採取した雪氷コアの物理解析を実施している。氷期から現代までの北極雪氷圏気候・環境変動研究を行うことに成功した。
2.極域ロシアでは、採取した雪氷試料の解析によって物質輸送経路の解明を行った。
3.東部シベリヤにおけるシベリヤ高気圧の発達に伴う雪氷現象の解明として、広域雪氷観測により採取した雪氷試料の解析によって極域環境を抽出した。
4.グリーンランドでは国際共同研究(North GRIP)に参加し、デンマーク・コペンハーゲン大学、ドイツ・アルフレッドウェゲナー研究所と共同観測を実施した。雪氷層掘削を行い、コアの一部を国内に持ち帰り解析を進めている。今後、我が国の南極における雪氷深層掘削コア解析研究と連携し、両極域を対象としたグローバルな地球環境の研究を展開していく。
5.ノルウエー極域では、環北極雪氷圏の低温下を妨げている海洋圏影響の解明を目的とし、海洋圏の影響を大きく受けているノルウェー・スバールバル諸島北東島東氷河で雪氷コアの掘削を実施した。以上に述べたように環北極雪氷圏気候・環境変動研究として幅広い調査・研究を実施した。人間活動の影響が集約的に現れている環北極雪氷圏全体を研究対象とし、各地域の雪氷環境特性を比較研究した。雪氷コア解析データを検討し、環北極雪氷圏の気候・環境変動研究を進めた。さらに、雪氷圏における物質フラックスの解明の観点から雪氷試料中の環境指標シグナルを抽出するとともに、その発現の地域特性を明らかにした。
