研究概要

ドイツDESY研究所に建設された世界初の電子陽子衝突装置HERAを用いて、電弱相互作用の測定を、国際共同実験ZEUS測定器により行った。この衝突では、4元運動量移行の2乗(Q^2)の値が10^5 GeV^2に達する。Q^2の大きな領域の散乱は、光子とZ粒子交換による中性流反応と、W粒子交換による荷電流反応に起因するものがある。両者の断面積を測定し標準模型との比較を行うことで、標準模型の検証を行う。
低いQ^2領域での中性流反応から陽子の構造関数を精密に求め、そのQ^2依存性が量子色力学(QCD)によって記述できることを示した。これにより高いQ^2での測定での標準理論からの予想値を得るのにこのQCDモデルによる陽子内クォーク分布を使用できる。荷電流反応に関する断面積は平成7年までに取られたe^-p、e^+p散乱データの両方を使って標準模型と比較したところ、統計誤差の範囲で標準模型とよい一致を示した。そこからW粒子の質量を求めることができた。高いQ^2の中性流反応では平成8年に得られたデータも含んだ全データを解析した結果、標準模型では0.2事象以下しか起こらないと予想される非常にQ^2の高い領域(Q^2>35000GeV^2)に、数事象のデータが得られた。まだ統計が少ないため有意であるかの即断はできないが、レプトクォークなどの新粒子や新相互作用の影響である可能性もある。この場合荷電流反応等の散乱にも異常があるかどうかが重要となる。平成8年までに取得した全データを使った荷電流反応の解析を急遽行い、平成9年6月に暫定結果として公表した。その結果は予想値よりやや多めになっているが現在の時点で結論をつけるのはまだ統計誤差が大きく早計である。より多くのデータが必要であり、今後予定されているHERA加速器の改善に期待している。
