研究概要

プレート・テクトニクスの焦点のひとつは海嶺でのプレートの誕生である。海嶺を詳しく調べるには、海底地震計を使った海底地震観測以上のものはない。海底下に起きる地震は、プレートの動きの反映そのものであり、海嶺で起きているメカニズムを調べるためには最も直接の研究になるからである。
研究代表者らが1960年代末から設計を始めて開発に成功した海底地震計を大西洋に持ち込んで、国際学術研究の科学研究費補助金で大西洋中央海嶺と関連する地域で精密な地震活動の研究を行い、精密な地震活動の分布を調べた。また、同じく海底地震計を使って制御震源地震学実験を行ない、海底下の地下構造を精密に調べあげた。いわば、地球内部の透視である。この研究以外、このような精密な海底地震計を使った観測は世界的にもほとんど例がない。
この研究は本報告書の研究発表の欄に書いたように、世界的な成果を上げつつある。
また、それぞれの年度の観測は膨大なデータ量であるために、観測結果の解析には、多くの時間と人手を要する。このため、現在まだ解析中であるデータも多く、今後、次々に国際的な学会や学会誌に発表する予定になっている。
また、国民一般の理解を得るために、これも研究発表に書いたように、一般書、科学雑誌などにも、一般的な解説を発表した。
