研究概要 |
Within the last fiscal year I have carried out a complete experimental study investigating cultural transmission of an arbitrary gesture in Japanese macaques using the group diffusion paradigm. I also collected data regarding the observation of a Japanese macaque carrying her dead infant for an unusually long period, followed by mother-infant cannibalism. I will present the findings of both studies at an International conference, this summer, and will write them up as an original research article and an observational case study, respectively, for submission to journals. The JSPS grant has enabled me to collaborate with Japanese researchers. I plan to attempt to carry out a survey of potentially cultural behaviours across Japanese macaques in Japan.

理由
I have successfully collected data for one of the originally planned experimental studies and have made considerable progress towards completing the second. I have also collected observational data for a third paper which I am writing up for submission. I have formed collaborations with Japanese researchers, presented findings of one study at an International level and participated in the JSPS Science Dialogue Programme.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
I have had two abstracts accepted for presentation at the International Primatological Congress in Hanoi Aug 11-16th 2014 : a talk to report the findings of the experimental investigation into cultural transmission of an arbitrary gesture ; and a poster to report the observational study of dead infant carrying followed by mother-infant cannibalism. I am currently finishing writing up a paper on the observation of dead-infant carrying and eating and will also write up the completed experimental study for submission. This fiscal year, I will complete collection of data for an experimental study investigating cultural diffusion of arbitrary object-related behaviours, also using the group diffusion paradigm, in captive Japanese macaques.
