In this year, I have developed a new sugar sponge: 1.Synthesis of sugar sponge: Complexation of NaOH and 1,4-Bis(β-D-mannopyranosyl)benzene furnished sugar sponge with hydrophilic pores where EtOH guest molecules were trapped by multiple hydrogen bonding interactions. Soaking crystals of sugar sponge in diethyl ether or CHCl3 resulted in guest exchange in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal fashion, thus Et2O or CHCl3 in pores were observed by single crystal X-ray analysis 2. Analysis of water soluble guest molecule- propylene oxide: Owing to the confined space and multiple hydrogen bonding sites, the sugar sponge is able to strongly accommodate the water guest molecules, S-propylene oxide. Immersion of one piece of crystals with ~ 100 × 80 × 60 μm size into 10 μL S-propylene oxide guests and stand at 50 oC for one day gives the guest-included sugar sponge. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that guest molecules were included within the pores at a ligand-guest ratio of 1:0.8, which was well agreement with the results of proton NMR analysis. It is worthy to note that guest molecules 3 were well arranged though intermolecular hydrogen bonding and fixed their position within the pores via C-H….π interaction and multiple hydrogen bonding with frameworks
