JASMIN計画は高精度位置天文測定のための赤外位置天文衛星(Japanese Astrometry Satellite Mission for INfrared Exploration)である。本研究の目的はJASMINEに必要な赤外線アレイ検出器を1開発し、実用化のための道筋を明らかにすることである。JASMINEでは広大な視野を埋め尽くす赤外1線に感度を持つ2次元のアレイ検出器が必要である。またサーベイを効率良く行うためには、TDI(Time Delay Integration)モードという電荷を転送しながら、同時に蓄積する手法が極めて有効であることが確認されている。JASMINEのために、必要な検出きは28000ピクセル×28000ピクセルの広大な領域を埋め尽くすことができ、赤外線に感度を持ち、さらにTDIモードでの動作が可能な2次元検出器である。さらに、天文観測のため検出効率が高く、雑音レベルの低い高性能な検出器である必要がある。2つの方向で新しい動作モードに対応する赤外線に感度をもつ検出器の検討を進めた。第一の方法は、HgCdTe(水銀カドミウムテルルの三元合金)を用いた、赤外線アレイ検出器をTDIモードに対応させる方法。第二の方法はCCDの赤外線感度の向上を試みることである。第一の方法ではおよそ2ミクロン波長帯のK-bandが観測波長帯となり、第二の方法ではおよそ0.9ミクロンのz-bandが観測波長帯となる。検討の結果、JASMINEには第二の方法を採用することとした。シミュレーションにより0.9ミクロンという短い波長域での観測でも、銀河構造解明のために必要な星数が確保できる見通しがたったこと、検出器製造コストがHgCdTeよりはるかに安価に抑えることができること、より安定した性能が得られることなどによる。そこですばるグループに合同して完全空乏型CCDの開発を進めるとともに、衛星搭載を念頭に置いたオンポードデータ処理システムを開発し、これを小型衛星に搭載し実宇宙空間で性能の実証を行うための基礎システムを構築した。
