研究概要

・初年度は、既に採取された堆積物を用いて、北半球高緯度域のおおまかな解析として北西部北太平洋亜寒帯域の過去40万年分の浮遊性有孔虫殻中の酸素同位体比、水温指標性化合物のアルケノンの分析結果を得た。
・H15年度は、観測中心の活動を行った。海洋研究船「みらい」BEAGLE2003航海に参加し、10月にチリ沖およびマゼラン海峡にて計4点、H16年2月に南東インド洋海嶺、ケルゲレン海台にてそれぞれ1点ずつ海底堆積物を採取した。
・Hl6-17年度は、化学分析中心の活動を行った。対比する北太平洋高緯度海域に関しては、過去10万年にわたるオホーツク海における表層水温復元、100-1000年規模の変動やヤンガードリアス期(1万1千年前に生じた寒冷期)における太平洋北西部の中層水循環速度の変化の復元を行った。その結果、ヤンガードリアス期に入る直前のベーリングアレレード温暖期(1万2千年前)に急激に中層水循環速度が低下したことが示唆された。この結果は、ほぼ同時期に同海域において埋蔵されているメタンハイドレートの崩壊の事実と整合的であり、中層循環速度の変化がハイドレートの崩壊というローカルな炭素循環変動のトリガーになっていた可能性を示した。
・チリ沖において採取された堆積物の水温指標性化合物であるアルケノン(円石藻Emiliania huxleyiのバイオマニカー)を分析し、同海域における古水温の復元を行った。コアトップのアルケノン水温は現在の現場表層の年平均水温に匹敵することから、堆積物中に記録されたアルケノン水温も年平均水温を復元しているものと考えられる。振幅は9-12度まで3度程度の幅を持って推移していることがわかった。
・今後の課題として、南北両半球の対比的研究には、チリ沖等において高時間分解能の堆積物をもっと採取する必要がある。
