In the past one year, I focused on designing and fabricating appropriate textured surfaces for modulating wettability and establishing the related theories. Other problems including surface defects, burrs and tool wear were also analyzed. Textured surfaces with anisotropic and unidirectional wetting properties were designed and fabricated by using the rotary ultrasonic texturing (RUT) method. The anisotropic wetting property was obtained by fabricating microgrooves and microdimples along a certain direction. The unidirectional wetting property was achieved by using a kind of microscale ratchet structure, which was designed by learning surface structures on wings of a kind of butterfly. To enhance the performances, hierarchical structures were fabricated. The influence of textural features on the surface wettability was also theoretically analyzed and experimentally studied. To fabricate textured surfaces with few surface defects and burrs is required. Therefore, the material removal processes with different cutting edges’ geometries were further analyzed using my pre-established modelling method. The geometries were optimized for better surface quality. Besides, to fabricate a textured surface in a large area is highly required. Therefore, the detrimental effect of tool wear should be minimized. To solve the problem, a highly wear-resistant nano-polycrystalline diamond tool was fabricated and used to overcome the bad effect of tool wear. The results show that textured surfaces in a large area can be successfully fabricated with no obvious tool wear by using the tools.
