I investigated the lubricating effect in traveling-wave type ultrasonic motors. I found that the motor performance in lubricated contact, including efficiency, speed, and torque, was lower than that in dry contact. Further studies showed that bending vibration is easily damped by the presence of lubricant or high preload, resulting in poor motor performance.
I also studied the effect of lubricant viscosity on motor performance. No distinct difference on motor efficiency can be found when the lubricants with different viscosities were used, which indicates that hydrodynamic lubrication did not occur even under low static preload. The results prove that lubricated ultrasonic motors can work in a wide temperature range, because motor performance is not greatly affected by lubricant viscosity.
