研究概要

ボルネオ(カリマンタン)の低湿地域で、生物多様性の維持機構と物質循環機構など、三日月湖と氾濫原湖の生態系の水位変動に対する応答機構を調べた。
1.カハヤン川流域の8湖沼の湖盆図を作成し水位変動に伴う湖沼の水理環境の詳細を明らかにした。これらの湖を、高水位期と低水位期における主河川への接続状態により、3つのカテゴリーに分類した。
2.乾期から雨期への移行期に、連結する2湖沼の水質連続測定を行い水位上昇に伴う湖水の鉛直混合過程を確認した。湖の水質は流域の泥炭湿地から供給される水と、主河川から供給される水に影響されて複雑に変動した。一次生産測定とリターフラックス観測により湖沼生態系は系外からの有機物供給に大きく依存していることが示された。
3.湖沼生物の多様性および現存量は水位変動に加えて湖の河川への接続状態に支配されていた。ホテイアオイなどの浮標性水生植物は、根圏に多くの付着無脊椎動物を保持し、湖の動物プランクトン群集の現存量を維持する上で重要な役割を果たしていた。
4.流域の森林伐採は水位とpHの低下や硫酸イオン濃度の増加などの水質悪化をもたらし、これらの要因が動物プランクトン密度を低下させた。森林伐採は湖岸林の面積減少、落葉等の有機物の供給を減少させる一方で、湖面に到達する光合成有効放射量とUV量を増加させると考えられる。生産量測定実験では、UVはDOCの分解を促進し、水中の群集呼吸量を増加させていた。微生物ループを介したワムシ類プランクトンの間接的増加が予測され、今後の検討課題である。
5.開発・水位低下の影響により最終的には魚類生産量が低下すると考えられるが、その機構についてはさらに検証がさらに必要である。ホテイアオイ等の浮漂大型水生植物を利用した伝統的な農法・漁法が、劣化した水域の回復に応用可能かは、今後の検討課題である。
