ソグド語は印欧語族のうちイラン語派に属する言語である。イラン語には、アヴェスタや古代ペルシア語碑文のような有名な古代語の資料があり、その一方で現代ペルシア語を含めて多くの言語や方言が今もなお話されている。このような背景から従来ソグド語文法は,主に印欧語族に属する一つの言語の変化と言う点から研究されてきた。このような研究状況を考慮して、本研究では語源や古代イラン語からの歴史的変化は研究の対象とせず、ソグド語をあくまでも生きて機能していた言語として共時的に扱い、その記述文法を提出することに努めた。一方で、シルクロードの国際商人たるソグド人の活躍は、多くの歴史家の注目するところであって、彼らには自らソグド語文献を読解して、翻訳ではなく文献そのものから内容を考察したいという希望が強かった。しかしソグド語は、残された資料がどれも断片的で、文献ごとに内容だけでなく表記法や文法までもが異なるという状況から、初学者には極めて学習しにくい言語でもあった。「ソグド語は難しい言語である」という、必ずしも正当ではない評価がしばしば聞かれる。今回ソグド語の記述文法を提出するにあたっては、初学者の使用の便宜をも図ることにした。ソグド語の文法全体を23課に分割し、各課には練習問題をつけた。そして文法の説明や練習問題で用いられている基本的なソグド語の単語は、語彙表にして巻末に集めて便宜とした。さらに歴史の研究者用には紀年法や度量衡についての付録を、言語面に興味をもつ研究者用にはソグド語の語彙の特徴、とりわけ借用語の来源と、現代ソグド語とも呼ばれるヤグノーブ語の語彙との対照も付録に加えた。
