研究概要

かに星雲はその中心に強磁場・高速自転の中性子星(パルサー)を持っている。パルサーは回転のエネルギーを磁化した相対論的なプラズマとして放出し(これをパルサー風と呼ぶ)、そのエネルギーによりかに星雲は輝いている。従来のかに星雲の描像ではパルサー風のエネルギーは殆どプラズマの運動エネルギーとして放出されていると見ていた(ローレンツ因子が百万以上のプラズマの流れ)。本研究は、この描像が誤りである可能性があることを提案し、それを検証しようとする。
本研究で以下の結果を得た。(1)X線観測とモデルの比較から星雲磁場が乱流になっていることを示した、(2)この結果を偏光から確立した、(3)かに星雲の詳細な観測からトーラス磁場が劇的に変動することや低エネルギー粒子が同時に加速されていることを示した、(4)磁気中性面と衝撃波の相互作用を初めて数値計算により解いた。以上から、従来のかに星雲の描像を塗り替えて、磁気散逸を含む星雲の姿がかなり有望なモデルとして浮上したといえる。しかし、今後、さらに精密な観測と理論の比較が必要である。本研究のサイド効果として電子陽電子対生成とパルサー風の形成過程の研究が多いに進歩したことを付け加えたい。
