The main achievement was completing a book manuscript, tentatively titled Colonizing Language: Cultural Production and Language Politics in Imperial Japan. The manuscript was submitted for review with Columbia University Press, a prestigious university publisher, and a contract was signed in early November. The book is currently scheduled to be released in spring 2018. Other publications and presentations are listed in detail in section 13. International exchange was also fostered through a keynote lecture given by the guest researcher and held at Waseda University on October 13, 2016. Entitled “Linguistic Imperialism and the Aporia of Silence in ‘Artists of the Peninsula’ and Spring on the Peninsula,” the lecture attracted students and faculty from the Waseda community as well as from Tokyo University and other surrounding universities. Official discussants included Michael Bourdaghs, a professor of Japanese literature at Chicago University; Hitomi Yoshio, a professor of Japanese literature at Waseda University; and Lee Sungsi, also a professor of Japanese literature at Waseda University.
