The first study describes the development of arylene macrocycles for the single-layer OLED, enabling one material to function in electron and hole transport layers (ETL and HTL), as well, an emission layer (EML) as a host material. The structure-performance relationship studies revealed the requirement for the arylene macrocycles to be utilized in the single-layer OLED as a base material. An unexpectedly high EQE value was recorded with a green Ir(ppy)3 emitter in such a single-layer OLED, indicating nearly quantitative electro-optical conversion has been achieved. The results indicated the infinite possibilities of arylene macrocycles for the future development in the organic electronics.
In the second study, a series of nitrogen-embedded [n]CMPs (n = 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14) was synthesized via one-pot, cross-coupling macrocyclization and their fundamental properties were clarified. All the macrocyclic structures in the crystalline solid state were revealed by X-ray crystallographic analysis, showing that the overall macrocyclic structures changes dramatically; depending on the numbers of arylene units. The solution-phase analyses showed the presence of flexible macrocyclic structures.
