Highly Cr-substituted CeO2 nano-catalysts with exposing {111} facets were synthesized using a flow-type reactor. The flow-type reactor realized rapid heating and mixing of reactant solutions, which enabled the synthesis of highly Cr-substituted CeO2 up to 38 mol%. The Cr-substituted CeO2 nano-catalysts showed extremely high oxygen storage capacity. By using the produced CeO2 nano-catalysts, hydrothermal bitumen cracking was performed at 300 and 350 ℃. Bitumen was successfully converted to lighter components including asphaltene without coke formation. Surprisingly, hydrogen was evolved during conversion and the amount of hydrogen gas increased with the amount of Cr substitution. These results clearly suggest that Cr-substituted CeO2 can be used for hydrogen generation from organic waste.
