西アフリカ・ギニアにおいて森林からの薪と木炭の利用は日常の生活エネルギーを得るための重要な資源である。薪や木炭の利用を首都コナクリからセリンバラまでの約1000kmについて調べた。その結果、村人は全ての樹種を薪や木炭として利用していた。薪は自家消費だけでなく、生業分業した村(どの村も)で一束1000FGから2000FGで売られていた。世帯では1日に直径5cm-10cmの薪を5本から10本消費している。また、木炭は家計にとっての重要な副収入で20Kgの袋が5000FGから18000FGの価格でギニア全土に売られていた。薪の消費量は19.59m3/年/世帯に消費される。この薪を1ヘクタールの森林から採取するとしたら、持続的な薪の供給は対象の森林の成長量が19.59m3でなければならず、普通の森林の成長量は10m3/year以下であり、より広い森林が必要となる。生活の安全保障をかなえるためにな、荒廃した森林を修復し、持続的に薪・木炭の利用を可能としなければならない。また、ラオスでの研究では人類は自然とともに暮らしており、その環境から切離して健康や生存を考えても意味がない。Human Securityとは、Human and his environmental securityである、熱帯モンスーン地域に住む人たちは、その環境を改変し、熱帯モンスーン林を利用して焼畑をするか、あるいは、開墾して天水田に依存し、近年では灌漑水田を作り生活している。しかし、それらは原風景である熱帯モンスーン林とは切っても切れない関係にある。そのような環境と生業の中で熱帯アジアのモンスーン地域に住む人びとの健康と疾病のプロフィールが形成される。この地域は近年、急激に変化しており、その中での健康と生存への影響をみる視点が大切である。以上から生態資源を持続的に利用することにおいて地域住民の人間安全保障が確立される。
