平成16〜19年度の研究期間中の各季節毎に合計11回、日本〜中近東航路のLNGタンカーによる船舶バラスト水とバラストタンク底の沈殿物の採取調査を実施した。そして、それら船上調査と関連する観測、実験結果に基づき、「海洋性プランクトンやバクテリア、菌の分析調査」や「バラストタンク水理実験・3次元数値シミュレーション実験」、「人工衛星や海上観測による関係海域の環境調査」、「衝撃波を利用したバラスト水処理技術の開発研究」などを実施した。主な研究内容は、(1)船舶バラスト水の処理や管理方法についての国際規則や条約、そしてそれらの動向に関する情報収集を実施した。(2)バラストタンク水理実験と3次元数値シミュレーションによるバラストタンク内の水循環の調査を実施し、バラスト水循環や交換の実態とその有効性を明らかにした。(3)圧縮空気銃による衝撃波と、微小気泡崩壊に伴う衝撃波を利用した海洋性バクテリアの不活性化技術に関する基礎的開発研究を実施し、その特性と有効性を明らかにした。(4)バラスト水やタンク底の沈殿物におけるプランクトンとバクテリア、菌類の分析調査を実施し、それらの実態を明らかにした。(5)人工衛星観測によるバラスト水交換海域における海洋生物の活性化状況と、バラスト水を採取する海域における生化学ならびに生産構造を調査し、それらの海域における海洋環境特性を明らかにした。平成20年度においても、衝撃波を利用したバラスト水処理技術の開発研究と、プランクトンのDNA分析に関する調査研究は継続して実施する。
