プロダクティブェイジング(Productive aging実りある加齢)は、高齢者が経済的な、あるいは非経済的な生産活動を行うことで、生き甲斐をもちながら地域に居住し生活することであり、そのような現象の実態解明と地域への影響分析、およびプロダクティブェイジングの創成メカニズムの解明を中心に研究を進めた。総括として、プロダクティブェイジングは大きく都市近郊型、都市近郊外縁型、都市遠郊型の3つに分類することができる。都市近郊型のプロダクティブェイジングは農産物の直売やルーラルティを基盤とする余瑕空間の提供を契機に発達している。都市近郊外縁型は集落営農やゾーニングなどの組織制度により農業維持システムの1つとして発達している。他方、都市遠郊型は農村の多様な資源や多機能性、あるいはルーラルティを再評価し、ルーラルツーリズムや余瑕空間を都市住民に提供することで発達してきた。プロダクティブエアイジングの3つのタイプに共通する創成メカニズムは、農村におけるソーシャルネットワークを維持・促進し、ソーシャルキャピタルを高めてきたことである。また、持続的な農村システムが自己完結型の農村システムの創成メカニズムは外部の社会や環境と密接に交流するようになり、農村とそれを取り巻く多様な社会空間は社会的持続性を構築するようになる。このように、プロダクティブェイジングの創成メカニズムが発達したのは、農村や社会における高齢化と対応するものであったが、地域の開発や発展が生産主義の視点(経済的な利潤を最優先)に代わってポスト生産主義の視点(非経済的なものも重視する)に基づくようになったことも重要であった。全体的には、プロダクティブェイジングの創成メカニズムは農村における多様な資源や環境、あるいは機能に基づいて発展してきたといえる。
