研究概要

西赤道太平洋暖水塊の一部である南シナ海について、その水温変動とグローバルな気候変動の関係を明らかにするため、今年度は南シナ海南部のパラワン島において試料採取を行った。現生のサンプルは2-3mのコアが3本、化石サンゴについても10本ほどの試料が得られた。成長速度が1.5cm/年程度であるので、少なくとも150年間の水温および塩分の変動について復元することが可能である。得られた試料はスラブにして軟X線写真を撮影した。X線回析装置による二次生物鉱物の有無の検討結果とあわせると、現生および化石サンゴのどちらについても、極めて保存状態が良いことが明らかになった。化石サンゴについては東京大学の加速器を用いて年代測定を行い、ほどんどが7000年前の、現在より気温が温暖であったといわれている、Hypsithermal期のものであることが明らかになった。6,500年前のサンゴと現生サンゴについての酸素炭層同位体比分析の結果、当時のどちらもとらえているが、水温のみの変化で説明しようとすると3℃以上慣例であったことになり、先行研究による海岸堆積物の分析結果と不一致が生じる。そのため、当時は塩分も現在よりも高かったことが明らかになった。これは恐らく当時の日射量分布が現在と異なっていたため、ITCZの北上に伴う降水バンドの変化が生じたためだとかんがえられる。この成果は2006年12月にサンフランシスコで開かれたアメリカ地球物理連合大会において口頭発表し、高い評価を得ることができた。
