As one promising energy resources, methane hydrate (MH) has extracted worldwide attention in recent years. This study is focused on the utilization of oceanic methane hydrate as an energy resource, which is targeted on the production conditions of Nankai Trough, Japan. In this year, scaling-up of the methane hydrate dissociation behavior and system-scale feasibility analysis have been conducted. First, based on the lab-scale dissociation experiments and numerical model development for multi-phase porous media flow, numerical simulation model is scaled-up from single thin layer to thick multi-layer model for real reservoir conditions. Second, based on the recent geological survey data and the large-scale simulation results, discussions on the Nankai Trough real production is conducted. The real production behaviors, boundary conditions and reservoir parameter effects are discussed in detail. The predicted production rate level in this simulation agrees with recent real production tests. Third, the comparison between Japan Nankai Trough and China Shenhu tests are conducted. The production prediction shows better agreement than previous models and the short-term agreement has been extended to long-term production prediction. The feasibility is confirmed for future use of methane hydrate as energy resource. Production strategy and future challenges are summarized for next-step research. 3 international journal papers, 5 conference papers/abstracts (including 1 keynote) have been published in this year.
