研究成果の概要

生殖細胞は、次世代に遺伝情報を伝える重要な役割を持つ。発生期に生まれた生殖細胞は、多段階の選択や競合を経て、その一部のみが精子や卵となると示唆されていたが、詳細は不明であった。本研究では、マウス精子形成において、生後の性成熟過程および性成熟期を通して起こる選択や競合を解析した。性成熟期に未熟な前駆細胞から幹細胞を生じる時、幹細胞とならずに分化し、実質的に次世代に寄与しない細胞集団を同定した。性成熟期には、幹細胞が細胞外因子をお互いに競合することで数を一定に維持することを明らかにした。

研究成果の学術的意義や社会的意義

両親から受け継いだ遺伝情報は、細胞分裂に伴って低い確率で変化する。遺伝情報の変化が子孫に伝わることは、次世代で遺伝病を生じたり、種の進化を生み出すことになる。本研究の結果は、生殖細胞集団のうち精子となって子孫に伝わる生殖細胞が残るプロセスの理解を進め、これらの重要な問題に対する重要な手がかりを与える。
