研究概要

湿潤熱帯生態系における土壌有機物動態を調べた本研究の主要な成果は、以下の通りである。
1) 各地フィールド(日本・インドネシアの天然林、タイ北部の焼畑耕作地・休閑林、タイ東北部の砂質畑作地、インドナシア各地のホームガーデン)において、土壌有機物動態を、温度・水分等環境因子の変動とあわせて実測した。
2) 土壌有機物減耗を低減するよう最適化された作付け体系の確立を目指して、タイ東北部の砂質畑作地において、ジオスタティスティクスを用いて土壌有機物動態の時空間的変異を実測した。土壌の有機炭素・窒素濃度、粒径分布、またこれらに関わる理化学性には、明瞭な空間変異が見られた。土壌有機物動態と耕作に伴う侵食が、これら土壌特性の空間的変異をもたらした原動力であると推察された。この結果はまた、ジオスタティスティクスの手法が、地形による土壌資源分布の不均一性を考慮した上で土壌有機物動態を解析する際、有用であることを示している。
3) 有機物動態に影響を及ぼす土壌関連パラメーターを解析した。焼畑耕作地・休閑地における炭素・窒素動態は、土壌酸性の程度に影響を受けていた。また火山性降下物に起因する土壌特性(あるいは三二酸化物の非晶質性)もまた、土壌有機物動態を強く規定していた。
4) 土壌有機物の分解速度は、このように湿潤アジアの限られた地域内でさえも、気候特性ばかりでなく地質的要因・土壌要因を反映して大きく異なっていた。土壌酸性は、異なるプロセス--分解速度定数に対する影響と水溶性有機物下方浸透を助長する働きの双方--を通して、土壌中の炭素動態に影響を及ぼしていた。ここに列挙した条件のいくつかは、湿潤熱帯に特有なものでもあるため、土壌有機物動態のモデル化の試みにおいても考慮されるべきであろう。
