Reversible change in basal spacing of 2D layered materials is a very essential property for fabricating actuator systems. This interesting concept of 2D layered materials is the main motivation for us to carry out further research in order to fabricate new types of actuators which can offer faster response time and require less operating voltage. Based on this background, in this JSPS project, we focused on development of a moisture-sensitive layered silicate intercalated coordination polymers. Due to synergy effects of the intercalated coodination polymers and silicate surface (covered with silanol groups), the basal spacing of this material reversibly changed upon adsorption/desorption of water molecules.
