In this project we developed the adiabatic theory of strong-field ionization for a co-linear one-electron two-nucleus model of a molecule. With this theory, which in one version goes beyond the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, it is possible to describe the photo-electron momentum distribution coming from the interaction of molecules with ultra-short and strong laser fields, which allows for a detailed understanding of the dynamics during the pulse, with potential applications in controlling chemical reactions. We developed the theory analytically, and established numerical programs for testing the theory. These tests found the theory to be accurate in the limit of slowly varying laser pulses, as we expected. Potential applications of the theory for describing interference and isotope effects were also demonstrated.
